Nanoleaf has consistently pushed the boundaries of smart lighting, turning our walls into dynamic canvases. Now, they’re looking up, bringing that same modular, color-rich philosophy to our ceilings with the Nanoleaf Skylight. It’s an ambitious attempt to transform the most overlooked surface in a room into its most interactive feature.

The Nanoleaf Skylight redefines what a ceiling light can be, moving far beyond simple illumination. At its core, this is a modular system of square light panels designed to replace a standard hardwired ceiling fixture. The starter kit includes three panels and the necessary wiring, but the system’s true appeal lies in its expandability. You can arrange the squares in various configurations and add more panels (up to 100 on a single controller) to create a custom lighting centerpiece that fits your space. The design is clean and futuristic, effectively mimicking a high-tech skylight, though the all-plastic construction feels a bit less premium than its price tag might suggest.

Installation is the first major hurdle and a critical consideration. Unlike a plug-in lamp, the Skylight requires hardwiring into your home’s electrical system. While the process is straightforward for anyone comfortable with replacing a light fixture, it’s a non-starter for most renters and a potential call to an electrician for many homeowners. This commitment immediately positions the Skylight as a permanent, high-investment piece of smart home infrastructure rather than a casual accessory.

Once installed, the Skylight’s performance is genuinely impressive. Each panel can produce up to 1,400 lumens, making a three-panel setup bright enough to serve as the primary light source for a medium-sized room. The RGBW LEDs deliver both vibrant, saturated colors and an excellent range of functional white light, from a warm 2700K to a cool 6500K. Whether you need focused task lighting or a colorful, ambient sunset effect, the Skylight delivers with beautiful diffusion and no noticeable hot spots.

As expected from Nanoleaf, the feature set is robust. The system supports over 16 million colors, dynamic animated scenes, and the popular Rhythm Music Sync feature that visualizes your music in real-time on the ceiling. It integrates seamlessly into the major smart home ecosystems via Matter, offering reliable control through Apple Home, Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, and Samsung SmartThings. The Nanoleaf app provides deep customization, allowing you to paint individual sections of the panels and create complex lighting schedules. The inclusion of Sense+ sensors for motion and ambient light detection also promises future-proof automation capabilities, though these are still being fully realized.

The value proposition is where the debate begins. The Nanoleaf Skylight is undeniably expensive, positioning itself as a luxury smart lighting product. It offers a level of customization and aesthetic flair that you simply can’t get from a standard smart bulb or a conventional ceiling fixture. However, the high cost combined with the installation requirement makes it a niche product. For the dedicated smart home enthusiast who values bespoke design and is already invested in a high-end ecosystem, the Skylight is a stunning and unique statement piece. It’s for those who see lighting not just as a utility, but as an integral part of their home’s architecture and ambiance.
