Apple M3 MacBook Air Review

Apple’s MacBook Air has long been the gold standard for ultraportable computing, blending power and portability in a near-perfect package. The latest iteration, powered by the new M3 chip, doesn’t reinvent the wheel but rather refines it to a polished sheen. It asks a familiar question: is this the ultimate everyday laptop for almost everyone?

The heart of this machine is the new M3 processor, which brings tangible, if not revolutionary, improvements. Built on a 3-nanometer process, it offers a modest CPU boost over the M2 but a more significant leap in graphics capability, including hardware-accelerated ray tracing and mesh shading. For daily tasks like web browsing, document editing, and streaming media, the M3 feels indistinguishable from its predecessor—which is to say, flawlessly fast. The real benefits emerge in more demanding workflows. Editing 4K video in Final Cut Pro is smoother, complex spreadsheets calculate faster, and even some modern games are surprisingly playable. The M3 also adds an AV1 decode engine, making video streaming from services like YouTube more efficient and less taxing on the battery. However, the elephant in the room remains the 8GB of unified memory in the base model. While Apple’s memory management is impressive, heavy multitaskers and creative professionals will feel the ceiling and should consider the 16GB upgrade essential, which unfortunately adds to the cost.

One of the headline features for the M3 is the long-awaited support for dual external displays. This is a massive win for productivity, but it comes with a significant catch: it only works when the laptop is in clamshell mode (with the lid closed). You cannot use the internal display alongside two external monitors. While this is a step up from the single-monitor limitation of previous chips, it’s a frustrating compromise that power users will need to factor into their workflow. Elsewhere, the feature set is strong. The Liquid Retina display is bright, sharp, and color-accurate, and the four-speaker sound system produces audio that is impressively full for such a thin device. Connectivity is solid with two Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports, MagSafe 3 for charging, a high-impedance 3.5mm headphone jack, and an upgrade to faster Wi-Fi 6E.

Ultimately, the M3 MacBook Air is an exceptional machine, but its value proposition is nuanced. It is, without question, the best ultraportable laptop on the market for general use. The performance is more than enough for the vast majority of users, the battery life is phenomenal, and the build quality is superb. It’s the perfect machine for students, writers, and professionals who prioritize portability without sacrificing capability. However, if you already own an M2 MacBook Air, there is very little reason to upgrade. For new buyers, the decision is tougher; the discounted M2 Air offers nearly the same everyday experience for less money, while upgrading the M3’s RAM and storage pushes its price into MacBook Pro territory. The M3 Air is for the user who wants the latest refinements, needs the dual-monitor support, and values the future-proofing of the more advanced M3 chip, making it the new default choice, albeit an incremental one.
