KEF LS50 Wireless II: Wireless Hi-Fi Redefined (Again)

KEF LS50 Wireless II Image 1

The original KEF LS50 Wireless shook the audiophile world, proving that genuinely high-fidelity audio could be achieved without a tower of separates and a rat’s nest of cables. Now, the LS50 Wireless II is here, promising even better sound, a streamlined experience, and a host of new features. But does it live up to the hype? We spent weeks putting these speakers through their paces, and here’s our verdict.

Right out of the box, the LS50 Wireless II makes a statement. KEF’s iconic Uni-Q driver, now in its 12th generation and featuring Metamaterial Absorption Technology (MAT), dominates the front baffle. This circular maze behind the driver is no mere aesthetic flourish; it absorbs 99% of unwanted sound radiating from the rear of the tweeter, resulting in a cleaner, more detailed high-frequency response. And it works. The soundstage is noticeably wider and deeper compared to the previous generation, with instruments placed precisely within the sonic landscape. Vocals are particularly impressive, exhibiting a clarity and intimacy that draws you into the music.

The sonic improvements extend beyond just the highs. The bass response is surprisingly robust for a speaker of this size, thanks in part to KEF’s updated Music Integrity Engine. While it won’t replace a dedicated subwoofer for the most bass-heavy genres, the LS50 Wireless II provides a satisfyingly full and balanced sound across the frequency spectrum. The clarity extends down low, avoiding the muddy bass sometimes found in smaller speakers.

Connectivity is another area where KEF has made significant strides. The W2 platform offers seamless integration with a wide range of streaming services, including Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect, Apple AirPlay 2, and Google Chromecast. The KEF Connect app is vastly improved, providing a user-friendly interface for setup, calibration, and music playback. The physical connections are generous too with HDMI eARC, analog, optical, and coaxial inputs. This makes them a true all-in-one system suitable for any music source.

Aesthetically, the LS50 Wireless II retains the sleek, minimalist design of its predecessor, with a range of stylish finishes to choose from. Build quality is exceptional, as one would expect from KEF. The speakers feel solid and substantial, exuding a sense of premium craftsmanship. The curved baffle minimises diffraction, contributing to the clean sound.

Despite all the improvements, the LS50 Wireless II isn’t perfect. The price point places it firmly in premium territory, potentially putting it out of reach for some audiophiles. Also, while the KEF Connect app is improved, occasional bugs still pop up. The reliance on an app for certain functions can also be frustrating for those who prefer a more traditional approach. Finally, while the bass is admirable, some listeners might find it still lacking for home theater use or certain music genres, thus requiring a subwoofer.
