Escape the AirTag Battery Grind: Elevation Lab TimeCapsule Review

Elevation Lab TimeCapsule AirTag 10-Year Battery Case Image 1

The Apple AirTag is a marvel of convenience, but its Achilles’ heel is its relatively short battery life. Swapping CR2032 batteries every year can become a minor, yet irritating, chore. Enter the Elevation Lab TimeCapsule, a clever AirTag case promising a decade of battery life. That’s a bold claim. Does it deliver? Let’s dive in.

The TimeCapsule’s core innovation lies in its internal battery, a significantly larger power source than the standard CR2032. Installation is straightforward: pry open the TimeCapsule, insert your AirTag, and snap it shut. The case replaces the original battery entirely, providing power through the TimeCapsule’s internal battery. The increased size is noticeable, making the AirTag chunkier, but the convenience factor may outweigh this for many.

Performance is exactly as advertised: extended battery life. While we haven’t had a decade to test it (obviously), the initial months of usage suggest Elevation Lab’s claim is legitimate. Battery health within the Find My app remains at 100%, a welcome change from the rapid decline experienced with standard batteries. The case doesn’t interfere with AirTag functionality; location tracking remains accurate and reliable. The AirTag’s speaker also works, though the sound is slightly muffled.

Build quality is solid. The TimeCapsule is constructed from a durable plastic that feels robust enough to withstand everyday wear and tear. It’s also water-resistant, offering added protection against the elements, though it’s not fully waterproof. The design is utilitarian, prioritizing functionality over aesthetics. It’s a functional block of plastic, not a design statement.

A key consideration is the non-replaceable nature of the internal battery. After ten years (or whenever the battery eventually dies), the entire TimeCapsule needs replacing. This might seem wasteful to some, but the extended lifespan and convenience are positioned as a significant trade-off. However, the long lifespan depends on typical usage. Frequent use, or extreme temperatures, could degrade the battery life substantially. Moreover, the initial upfront cost is substantially higher than a pack of CR2032 batteries.

In summary, the Elevation Lab TimeCapsule is a compelling solution for those seeking to liberate themselves from the AirTag battery replacement cycle. While it does add bulk and involves a higher upfront cost, the potential for a decade of maintenance-free operation makes it an attractive option for users who value convenience above all else. It’s particularly well-suited for AirTags attached to items that are difficult to access regularly, like luggage or infrequently used equipment.
