Dyson has long treated hair care as an engineering problem, and the Supersonic Nural is its most ambitious solution yet. This isn’t just another hairdryer; it’s a sensor-packed device promising to protect your scalp and hair with intelligent, adaptive heat. It poses the question of whether our styling tools can, and should, be as smart as the rest of our tech.

The Nural is an evolution, not a revolution, of the iconic Supersonic platform, and that’s a good thing. The core performance is still best-in-class, powered by the V9 digital motor that produces a focused, high-velocity jet of air. Drying time is cut down significantly compared to conventional dryers, without resorting to the kind of extreme heat that fries your hair. Where the Nural sets itself apart is with its suite of intelligent sensors, designed to address a problem you might not have known you had: scalp health.

The flagship feature is “Scalp protect mode.” Activated by default, it uses an infrared time-of-flight sensor to measure the distance between the dryer and your head. As you bring the Nural closer, it automatically dials down the heat to maintain a constant, comfortable 55°C (131°F) at the scalp. In practice, this is seamless. An LED inside the transparent end cap changes color from yellow (low heat) to orange and red (high heat) as you pull it away, providing a clear visual cue. It’s a brilliant piece of engineering that transforms the drying experience from a manual balancing act into an automated, protective process.

Beyond scalp protection, the Nural introduces other smart conveniences. “Attachment learning” remembers the last heat and airflow settings you used for each of the magnetic attachments, a genuinely useful quality-of-life improvement. A built-in accelerometer enables “Pause detect,” which deactivates the heater and reduces airflow to a whisper when you set the dryer down, roaring back to life the moment you pick it up. The design is classic Dyson—impeccably built, perfectly balanced, and now featuring a clear end cap that proudly displays the complex circuitry within. It’s a statement piece, but one that is also functionally superior in its ergonomics.

The inescapable question, however, is one of value. At a significant premium over the already-expensive original Supersonic, the Nural’s new features must justify their cost. For users with sensitive scalps, fine hair, or a history of heat damage, the automated protection is a compelling, perhaps even essential, innovation. For others, who have mastered their technique with a standard Supersonic, the benefits may feel more incremental than transformative. The Nural isn’t just a purchase; it’s a significant investment in a preventative, tech-forward approach to hair care.

Ultimately, the Dyson Supersonic Nural is a masterpiece of niche engineering. It refines an already-excellent product with intelligent features that actively work to protect your hair and scalp from damage. It’s for the user who prioritizes hair health above all else and is willing to pay a premium for technology that makes that protection effortless. If you view your hair dryer as a critical tool for long-term health, not just a styling accessory, the Nural makes a powerful case for being the smartest choice you can make.
