The dream of a single audio device for every workout, from the pool to the pavement, has long been a holy grail for athletes. Shokz aims to finally deliver on that promise with the OpenSwim Pro, a device that blends waterproof MP3 playback with everyday Bluetooth convenience. This hybrid approach promises to declutter your gym bag and streamline your entire training audio experience.

Shokz has honed its design language over the years, and the OpenSwim Pro is a familiar, refined take on the open-ear formula. The lightweight, flexible titanium band wraps securely around the back of the head, providing a stable fit that doesn’t budge during flip turns or intense sprints. The IP68 waterproof rating isn’t just for show; this headset is built to withstand full submersion for extended periods, making it a truly reliable swimming companion. Physical buttons for volume, power, and mode switching are a welcome feature, offering positive tactile feedback that’s easy to operate with wet hands, a crucial advantage over finicky touch controls.

Performance is a tale of two modes. In Bluetooth mode, the OpenSwim Pro functions much like the company’s popular OpenRun series. The bone conduction audio is crisp and clear for podcasts and vocals, and perfectly adequate for background music while maintaining full situational awareness. As with all bone conduction tech, the bass response is present but won’t satisfy audiophiles seeking a deep, thumping beat. The addition of dual microphones for calls is a major upgrade over the original OpenSwim, making the Pro a viable all-day headset, though call quality is best in quieter environments.

Switching to MP3 mode is where the “Swim” moniker comes to life. Since Bluetooth signals can’t penetrate water, the built-in 32GB player is essential. Loading music is still handled via a proprietary magnetic charging cable connected to a computer, a slightly dated process in a world of streaming. Once in the water, however, the experience is transformative. The bone conduction technology excels here, using the water to create a surprisingly immersive and clear soundscape that’s far superior to traditional waterproof earbuds. With space for up to 8,000 songs, you’ll never run out of motivation during a long session.

The “Pro” features extend beyond just adding Bluetooth. Battery life is solid, delivering up to nine hours of playback in Bluetooth mode and around six in the more power-intensive MP3 mode. Shokz app integration also makes its debut on a swimming device, allowing for easy mode switching and access to two EQ settings: a standard mode and a vocal booster. While not revolutionary, this app support modernizes the user experience and brings it in line with the rest of the Shokz ecosystem. The value proposition hinges entirely on your lifestyle. At a premium price, it’s an expensive luxury for a casual user. But for the dedicated triathlete or multisport enthusiast, the cost of the OpenSwim Pro is easily justified when compared to purchasing separate, high-quality headphones for land and a dedicated waterproof MP3 player for the water.

Ultimately, the Shokz OpenSwim Pro successfully bridges the gap between two distinct product categories. It’s a masterclass in focused engineering for a specific type of user. If your workouts are confined to the gym or the running path, other models offer better value. But for the athlete who truly does it all and demands a single, no-compromise audio solution for every environment, the OpenSwim Pro is the undisputed champion.
