For years, LG’s C-series OLEDs have been the default recommendation for gamers and cinephiles seeking the perfect balance of price and performance. The new 42-inch OLED42C5 aims to not just continue that legacy but to redefine what a compact, high-end display can achieve. It’s a powerhouse display that demands serious consideration.

LG has essentially perfected an already winning formula with the OLED42C5. Building on its predecessors, this year’s model focuses on one key area: brightness. By integrating its latest Micro Lens Array (MLA) technology, typically reserved for larger panels, into this 42-inch form factor, LG has delivered a significant boost in specular highlight intensity. In practice, this means HDR content, whether in games or movies, pops with a newfound vibrancy that puts it on par with high-end dedicated gaming monitors. The perfect blacks and infinite contrast inherent to OLED technology are still the star of the show, but now they’re complemented by a brilliance that makes every scene feel more lifelike and immersive.

The new Alpha 10 AI Processor driving the panel is another noteworthy upgrade. Upscaling of lower-resolution content is cleaner and more convincing than ever, while the Dynamic Tone Mapping Pro feature now analyzes scenes with greater granularity, ensuring that no detail is lost in either the brightest or darkest parts of the image. For gamers, this translates to superb visibility in shadowy corners without washing out the rest of the picture. Combined with a full suite of gaming features—four HDMI 2.1 ports, 120Hz support, G-SYNC and FreeSync Premium compatibility, and an incredibly low input lag—the OLED42C5 stands as one of the most capable and versatile gaming displays on the market.

From a design perspective, the C5 is an exercise in refinement. The panel itself is impossibly thin, with whisper-slim bezels that let the picture dominate your field of view. The chassis, which houses the electronics and speakers, remains compact, and the included stand provides a stable base perfectly suited for a desktop setup. While the stand is functional, its fixed position lacks the ergonomic adjustments—like height and swivel—found on premium monitors, a clear trade-off for its TV-first heritage. The build quality feels solid, utilizing a mix of high-quality composites and metal accents that look and feel premium.

Where the OLED42C5 carves its niche is in its value proposition as a do-it-all display. It’s undoubtedly a premium-priced product, commanding more than many excellent QD-OLED monitors. However, none of those monitors offer the same smart TV functionality, powered by a mature webOS platform, or the broadcast TV processing chops that LG has honed over years. The onboard audio is serviceable for casual viewing but lacks the depth and impact for serious gaming or movie watching; a dedicated soundbar or headphone setup remains a strong recommendation.

Ultimately, the LG OLED42C5 is a masterclass in focused iteration. It takes a beloved product and elevates its performance in the area that matters most, without compromising its core strengths. It’s a phenomenal, albeit expensive, choice for the user who wants one screen to serve as a world-class PC gaming monitor, an elite console display, and a stunning 4K smart TV. If your space is limited but your standards are not, this display is nearly impossible to beat.
