For years, LG’s G-series has been the benchmark for high-end OLED televisions, but the G4 feels different. It’s an assertive step forward, blending cutting-edge brightness enhancements with a new, more powerful brain to challenge not just other OLEDs, but the very limits of display technology. This TV isn’t just an iteration; it’s a meticulously engineered showcase of what’s possible when a company at the top of its game refuses to rest on its laurels.

LG has refined its Micro Lens Array (MLA) technology, now dubbed MLA+, and paired it with a new Alpha 11 AI processor to achieve staggering levels of brightness. Where previous OLEDs sometimes struggled in bright rooms, the G4 shines. Specular highlights in HDR content pop with an intensity that borders on realism, creating incredible depth and impact without washing out the surrounding image. This brightness boost never comes at the expense of OLED’s foundational strength: perfect, inky blacks. The resulting contrast is breathtaking, delivering a picture that is both punchy and nuanced. Color reproduction is superb, and while competitors with QD-OLED panels might offer a sliver more saturation in the very brightest tones, the G4’s color accuracy and natural presentation are second to none. The new processor also brings improvements to motion handling and upscaling, making everything from 4K Blu-rays to compressed streaming content look exceptionally clean.

Aesthetically, the G4 continues the tradition of the “Gallery Design.” It’s an impossibly thin panel with a uniform thickness, designed to sit perfectly flush against a wall with its included zero-gap mount, resembling a framed piece of art. The build quality is impeccable, with a minimalist metal bezel that lets the picture command your full attention. In a welcome change from previous years, LG now includes a sleek, premium stand in the box for most sizes (55″ to 83″), providing more flexibility for those who don’t plan to wall-mount.

Under the hood, webOS 24 offers a familiar but refined experience. User profiles help tailor content recommendations, and the system feels snappier than ever. The Magic Remote, with its on-screen pointer, remains an intuitive way to navigate. However, the home screen can still feel a bit busy, with prominent ad placements that detract from the otherwise premium feel. On the gaming front, the G4 is an absolute powerhouse. It boasts four full-bandwidth HDMI 2.1 ports and is one of the first OLEDs to support a 144Hz refresh rate, making it a dream companion for high-end PC gaming. Coupled with support for G-Sync, FreeSync Premium, and an incredibly low input lag, it delivers a gaming experience that is flawlessly smooth and responsive.

The LG G4 is unapologetically a flagship product with a price tag to match. It sits at the top of the market, commanding a premium over LG’s own excellent C4 series and competing head-on with the best from Samsung and Sony. The performance jump over its predecessor, the G3, is noticeable but not revolutionary, which may give G3 owners pause. However, for those buying a new high-end TV today, the G4’s combination of extreme brightness, a more powerful processor, class-leading gaming features, and a flexible design (thanks to the included stand) presents a powerful value proposition for those who demand the best.

Ultimately, the LG G4 OLED evo is a triumph of engineering. It’s for the discerning cinephile who craves perfect black levels and dazzling HDR highlights, and for the hardcore gamer who demands the fastest, most responsive panel on the market. If you want one of the most technically impressive and visually stunning televisions money can buy in 2024, the G4 makes an incredibly compelling case for being your new centerpiece.
