In a market saturated with “set-it-and-forget-it” devices, finding a dash cam that balances high-end performance with genuine smart features can be a challenge. The Botslab G980H Pro enters this competitive space not with a whisper, but with a confident declaration of its capabilities. Touting a 4K front camera, a full suite of driver aids, and a robust parking surveillance system, it aims to be more than just an impartial witness to an accident; it strives to be an integrated safety co-pilot for your vehicle. But does this feature-packed device deliver on its ambitious promises? We put it to the test to find out.

Design and Installation

Out of the box, the G980H Pro presents a utilitarian, wedge-shaped design. While it won’t win any minimalist design awards and is chunkier than some of its rivals, its form is dictated by function. The angled body sits snugly against the windshield, and the large lens housing speaks to the serious optics within. The build is a sturdy matte plastic that feels durable and does an excellent job of resisting fingerprints and distracting reflections.

Installation is refreshingly straightforward, thanks to the included electrostatic sticker. This transparent film applies to your windshield first, allowing you to affix the camera’s adhesive mount to the film instead of directly to the glass. This makes removal or repositioning a clean, residue-free process. The rear camera is a small, discreet cylinder that mounts easily on the back window, with a generous cable length that should accommodate most sedans and SUVs.

Core Performance: The 4K Difference

The headline feature of the G980H Pro is its front camera, powered by a Sony STARVIS IMX415 sensor that captures footage in true 4K (3840x2160p). In real-world use, this resolution is not just a number on a spec sheet. Daylight footage is exceptionally sharp, with vibrant colors and excellent dynamic range. Crucially, the clarity allows you to easily discern license plates, road signs, and other fine details, even from a distance or when pausing a moving frame.

Nighttime performance, often the Achilles’ heel of lesser dash cams, is where the G980H Pro impresses. The sensor, combined with a wide f/1.8 aperture and Wide Dynamic Range (WDR) processing, does a commendable job of balancing bright streetlights and dark shadows. While some grain is inevitable in very low-light conditions, noise is well-controlled, and details like license plates remain legible in most urban and suburban driving scenarios—a critical performance benchmark that many competitors fail to meet. The 140° field of view provides a wide, panoramic perspective without significant “fisheye” distortion at the edges.

Features That Matter

Beyond pure image quality, the G980H Pro is loaded with a suite of features that enhance its utility. The built-in GPS is responsive, accurately embedding location and speed data into your video files, which is invaluable for evidentiary purposes. Connecting to the camera via its built-in Wi-Fi is a stable experience, and the Botslab app is surprisingly polished. It’s intuitive to navigate, allowing for easy footage review, downloads to your phone, and seamless settings adjustments without ever needing to fiddle with the camera itself.

The 24-hour parking surveillance is a standout feature, though it requires a separate hardwire kit for constant power. Once installed, it offers multiple modes, including collision detection and a power-efficient time-lapse recording that provides a continuous overview of your vehicle’s surroundings while parked. The included ADAS (Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems) features, such as lane departure and forward collision warnings, are present but, like on most dash cams, are a mixed bag. They can be helpful on long highway drives but are often overly sensitive in city traffic, leading to frequent and sometimes distracting alerts. Fortunately, they can be easily disabled.

The Verdict

The Botslab G980H Pro is a highly capable and feature-rich dash cam that punches well above its price point. It successfully bridges the gap between basic, budget-oriented models and the prohibitively expensive premium brands. The superb 4K video quality from the front camera, coupled with a reliable app and a genuinely useful parking mode, forms a powerful core package. While the rear camera is merely functional and the ADAS features feel more like a beta test than a finished product, these are minor critiques of an otherwise excellent system.

This dash cam is best suited for the tech-savvy daily commuter or the safety-conscious family owner who wants top-tier video evidence and advanced surveillance features without paying a premium. If you value crystal-clear video and robust app control over a sleek, minimalist design, the G980H Pro is one of the most compelling options on the market today.
