The AirTag’s “Forever” Upgrade: Elevation Lab TimeCapsule Review

Apple’s AirTag is a marvel of miniaturized tracking, but it has one nagging, real-world limitation: a battery that requires annual replacement. For items you handle daily, like keys or a backpack, this is a minor inconvenience. But for assets you want to track discreetly over the long term—a classic car in storage, expensive equipment, or a hidden emergency kit—that yearly chore becomes a significant flaw. Elevation Lab, known for its practical and robust accessories, has tackled this problem head-on with the TimeCapsule, a ruggedized case that promises a decade of maintenance-free tracking. It’s a bold claim, but one that fundamentally changes how you can use an AirTag.

Design & Durability: A Fortress for Your Tracker

First impressions of the TimeCapsule are all about utility. Forget Apple’s sleek minimalism; this is a product built for a purpose, not for aesthetics. Constructed from a tough, glass fiber-reinforced composite, it feels dense and practically indestructible. It’s significantly larger and thicker than a bare AirTag, transforming the slim disc into a chunky, puck-like object. This added bulk is a necessary trade-off for its two primary features: a larger battery cavity and extreme durability.

The case secures with four stainless steel Torx screws, and Elevation Lab thoughtfully includes the required driver in the box. This screw-down design isn’t just for show—it’s key to its IP68 waterproof and dustproof rating. This means it can be fully submerged in water and is completely sealed from fine dust, making it suitable for mounting on the undercarriage of a vehicle or attaching to outdoor gear without a second thought. While its size precludes it from being a keychain accessory, its ruggedness opens up a world of harsh-environment tracking possibilities.

Performance & Features: The 10-Year Promise

The TimeCapsule’s entire premise rests on its ability to house a CR2477 coin battery, which boasts over three times the capacity of the standard CR2032 battery found in an AirTag. This is how Elevation Lab arrives at its 10-year battery life estimate. While we can’t test a decade-long claim in a review, the math is sound. The AirTag is an incredibly low-power device, and a massively larger battery should, in theory, extend its life proportionally. For users who want to “set and forget” a tracker in a hard-to-reach place, this is a game-changer.

A potential concern with any thick, sealed case is signal degradation. Fortunately, the TimeCapsule’s composite material is RF-transparent, and in our testing, there was no noticeable impact on Bluetooth range or the precision of the Ultra Wideband (UWB) finding feature. The one significant performance compromise is the AirTag’s built-in speaker. The waterproof sealing muffles the sound considerably, reducing its audible alert to a faint chirp. This makes finding a hidden TimeCapsule by sound alone in a noisy environment very difficult, shifting the reliance almost entirely to the UWB directional arrow on your iPhone. The security-focused design also means a quick battery swap is impossible—you’ll need the specific Torx driver, making it more resistant to casual tampering.

The Verdict: Niche, but Unbeatable in Its Class

The Elevation Lab TimeCapsule isn’t for everyone, and it doesn’t try to be. If you’re looking for a stylish holder for your car keys, this isn’t it. This is a specialized tool designed for a specific, yet crucial, use case: long-term, low-maintenance, and highly durable asset tracking. It’s for the person who wants to hide a tracker in their boat, motorcycle, or Pelican case and not think about it again for years.

For a modest investment, the TimeCapsule transforms a consumer gadget into a serious, semi-permanent tracking solution. It brilliantly solves the AirTag’s biggest weakness for covert use, wrapping it in a shell that can withstand almost anything you throw at it. If your tracking needs extend beyond the everyday and into the realm of long-term security, the TimeCapsule is not just a good option—it’s arguably the best one on the market.
