The Featherweight Champion: An LG Gram 16 (16Z90Q) Review

LG Gram 16 (16Z90Q) Image 1

The laws of physics have long dictated a frustrating compromise for laptop users: you can have a large, immersive screen, or you can have an ultra-portable device, but you can’t have both. For years, LG has been systematically defying this convention with its Gram lineup, and the latest Gram 16 (16Z90Q) continues this legacy of lightweight rebellion. It packs a sprawling 16-inch display into a chassis that weighs less than many 13-inch ultrabooks, forcing us to reconsider what a large-format notebook can be. But is it just a one-trick pony, or is there real substance beneath its impossibly light surface?

Design and Build: A Study in Lightness

Picking up the Gram 16 for the first time is a genuinely surprising experience. At just 1.19kg (2.62 lbs), it feels almost hollow, a trick of engineering that LG achieves with a magnesium-alloy chassis. The design is minimalist and clean, with a matte black finish that resists fingerprints well and looks sharp in any professional setting. Despite its featherweight nature, the laptop boasts MIL-STD-810G durability, meaning it’s been tested against shock, vibration, and temperature extremes.

This lightness, however, comes with a trade-off that can be disconcerting: chassis flex. There’s a noticeable give in the keyboard deck and some flex in the display lid if you intentionally twist it. While it passes military-grade durability tests, it doesn’t feel as rigid or dense as an aluminum-clad competitor like a MacBook Pro. It’s a perception issue more than a practical one, but for users accustomed to tank-like build quality, it takes some getting used to.

Display and Productivity: More Screen, More Done

The true centerpiece of the Gram 16 is its stunning display. The 16-inch IPS panel features a productivity-friendly 16:10 aspect ratio and a crisp WQXGA (2560×1600) resolution. This extra vertical real estate is a game-changer for viewing documents, browsing websites, and managing spreadsheets, significantly reducing the need for endless scrolling. Color reproduction is excellent, with 99% DCI-P3 coverage making it suitable for photo editing and content creation. The anti-glare coating does a commendable job of taming reflections, and brightness is more than adequate for indoor and shaded outdoor use.

The user experience is further enhanced by a top-tier keyboard and trackpad. The keyboard offers a full number pad—a rarity in this weight class—and provides satisfyingly deep key travel and a quiet, tactile response. The massive glass trackpad is smooth, precise, and handles Windows Precision gestures flawlessly. It’s an input setup built for long hours of comfortable work.

Performance and Battery: The Marathon Runner

Inside, the 16Z90Q is powered by Intel’s 12th Gen Core i7-1260P processor, paired with fast LPDDR5 RAM and a Gen4 NVMe SSD. This combination delivers exceptionally snappy performance for everyday productivity tasks. Web browsing with dozens of tabs, office applications, and streaming media are all handled without a stutter. However, the P-series chip and its integrated Intel Iris Xe graphics have clear limits. This is not a machine for serious gaming or heavy-duty video rendering. It can handle light photo editing and casual gaming, but sustained, demanding workloads will cause the fans to spin up and performance to throttle.

Where the Gram 16 truly excels is battery life. The 80Wh battery is enormous for a laptop this light, and the results are spectacular. It’s an all-day machine, and then some. You can confidently leave the charger at home for a full day of meetings, classes, or work at a coffee shop. This incredible endurance, combined with its low weight, makes it one of the most truly portable large-screen laptops on the market. Connectivity is another strong point, with two Thunderbolt 4 ports, two USB-A 3.2 ports, a full-size HDMI, a microSD card reader, and a headphone jack, eliminating the need for a dongle-filled life.

The Final Verdict

The LG Gram 16 (16Z90Q) isn’t trying to be the most powerful laptop; it’s engineered to be the most practical. It makes a single, brilliant trade-off: it sacrifices the feeling of dense, metallic rigidity for a level of portability that is unmatched in its size class. This is the ultimate machine for the mobile professional, the student who needs a large screen for research without the back strain, or anyone who values screen real estate and battery life above all else. If your workload involves demanding graphics or sustained processing, look elsewhere. But if you want a beautiful, expansive window into your digital world that you can carry anywhere without a second thought, the LG Gram 16 remains the undisputed featherweight champion.
