The 10-Foot USB-C Cable That Almost Does It All

Plugable PS-10CC Image 1

In the sprawling, often confusing world of USB-C cables, finding one that ticks every box is the tech equivalent of a unicorn hunt. We all have that drawer of shame, filled with cables that look identical but offer wildly different performance. One might charge your laptop but transfer files at a snail’s pace, while another handles data beautifully but can’t output video. Plugable, a brand known for its no-nonsense connectivity gear, wades into this chaos with the PS-10CC, a 10-foot (3m) USB-C cable that promises high-speed data and respectable power delivery. It aims to be the long-range workhorse in your tech arsenal, but does it deliver on that promise?

Performance Under Pressure

The headline feature of the PS-10CC is its support for USB 3.1 Gen 2 speeds, delivering a theoretical maximum of 10Gbps. In a world where many bundled and generic USB-C cables are secretly just USB 2.0 (a paltry 480Mbps), this is a monumental difference. In real-world testing with an external NVMe SSD, the cable performed admirably, consistently hitting read/write speeds that saturated the drive’s controller, typically in the 900-950 MB/s range. For videographers offloading 4K footage, developers moving large repositories, or anyone backing up significant data, this cable eliminates a major bottleneck.

On the power front, the PS-10CC is equipped with an E-Marker chip, enabling it to safely negotiate and deliver up to 60W of power. This is more than sufficient for fast-charging phones, tablets like the iPad Pro, and a wide range of ultrabooks, including the entire MacBook Air line and Dell’s XPS 13. However, this is also its most significant limitation. For power-hungry machines like a 16-inch MacBook Pro or a high-performance gaming laptop, 60W is not enough to charge the device under load; at best, it will only slow the battery drain.

Design and Build Quality

The first thing you notice about the PS-10CC is its sheer length. At 10 feet, it provides an incredible amount of freedom. You can comfortably use your laptop while it’s charging from a distant wall outlet or arrange a desktop setup without being tethered right next to your dock. This length is a genuine quality-of-life improvement.

The cable itself is thick and feels exceptionally durable, with a sturdy, rubberized jacket instead of the more common braided nylon. While this inspires confidence in its longevity, it also makes the cable somewhat stiff and less pliable than its braided counterparts. The connectors are housed in a robust molding with substantial strain relief, mitigating the most common point of failure in lesser cables. It also includes a handy Velcro tie, a small but appreciated touch for cable management.

The Critical Omission: A Lack of Video

For all it does right, there’s a crucial feature missing from the PS-10CC: video output. The cable does not support DisplayPort Alternate Mode, meaning you cannot use it to connect your laptop to a USB-C monitor. This is a deliberate design choice to maintain signal integrity for 10Gbps data over its extended 10-foot length, which is a difficult engineering feat. While understandable from a technical perspective, it prevents the PS-10CC from being the true “one cable” solution many users crave. If your workflow involves a direct laptop-to-monitor connection via USB-C, you will need to look elsewhere.

The Final Verdict

The Plugable PS-10CC is not a universal “do-everything” cable, and it doesn’t pretend to be. Instead, it is a specialized tool that executes its core functions flawlessly. It’s an exceptional choice for anyone who needs to transfer large amounts of data at high speed over a long distance while supplying a respectable amount of power. It’s the perfect companion for an external SSD, a VR headset like the Meta Quest, or for a home office setup where flexibility and reach are paramount.

However, if your primary need is to drive an external display or to power a high-performance workstation laptop, this isn’t the cable for you. By understanding its specific strengths—length, data speed, and robust build—and acknowledging its limitations, you can see the PS-10CC for what it is: a high-quality, reliable, and incredibly useful cable for the right kind of power user.
