Bowers & Wilkins Px7 S2e Review: The Evolution of Elegance

Bowers & Wilkins Px7 S2e Image 1

In the crowded arena of premium wireless headphones, standing out requires more than just a spec sheet. It demands a philosophy. Bowers & Wilkins has always championed a sound-first approach, and with the Px7 S2e, they’re not rewriting their playbook but refining it. The ‘e’ stands for ‘evolved,’ a subtle but crucial distinction. This isn’t a ground-up redesign; it’s a meticulously re-tuned and optimized version of the already excellent S2, aiming to prove that true evolution happens in the details.

Design and Build: Understated Luxury

Unboxing the Px7 S2e is a familiar pleasure. The design language is pure B&W: elegant, mature, and impeccably constructed. Woven fabric accents on the headband and earcups contrast beautifully with the smooth, matte-finished metal arms. There’s a tangible sense of quality here that plastic-heavy rivals often miss. They feel substantial without being overly heavy, striking a careful balance between durability and long-term comfort.

The memory foam earpads are plush and create an effective passive seal. However, the clamping force is notably firm out of the box. While this ensures a secure fit and aids noise isolation, it may feel a bit too snug for those with larger heads during the first few hours of use. It does loosen up, but the initial impression is one of assertive presence rather than a gentle embrace. The included hard-shell carrying case is a welcome touch, matching the premium aesthetic and offering robust protection.

Performance: The Audiophile’s Wireless Dream

This is where the ‘e’ in S2e truly earns its place. B&W has leveraged a new, 24-bit capable Digital Signal Processor (DSP) to re-tune the output from the 40mm angled drivers. The result is nothing short of spectacular for a wireless headphone. The sound signature is balanced, articulate, and breathtakingly clear.

Bass is a masterclass in control. It’s deep, textured, and fast, delivering punch and impact without ever bleeding into the midrange or sounding boomy. Mids are the star of the show, rendering vocals and instruments with a natural, expressive character that is often lost in more processed sound profiles. Highs are crisp and detailed, providing air and sparkle to the mix without a hint of harshness or sibilance. This is a headphone that rewards you for listening to well-mastered tracks, revealing layers and nuances you might have missed before. Support for Bluetooth 5.2 with aptX Adaptive ensures you’re getting the best possible wireless stream from compatible devices.

Features and Functionality: Capable, Not Crowded

When it comes to Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), the Px7 S2e is very good, but not a class leader. It effectively nullifies low-frequency drones from engines and air conditioners, making it a capable travel companion. However, it can’t quite match the uncanny silence created by the top contenders from Sony and Bose, particularly when it comes to blocking out more unpredictable, higher-frequency sounds like office chatter.

The control scheme is refreshingly tactile, with physical buttons for playback, volume, and power. This is a deliberate choice that many will prefer over finicky touch controls. The Bowers & Wilkins Music app provides access to basic EQ (bass and treble sliders), ANC modes, and firmware updates. Battery life is a solid 30 hours with ANC engaged, with a 15-minute quick charge providing an impressive seven hours of playback. A notable omission, however, is the lack of a 3.5mm analog input. While you can listen via the included USB-C cable, those wanting to plug into an older source or in-flight entertainment system will need an adapter.

The Verdict: For the Listener First

The Bowers & Wilkins Px7 S2e is not trying to win the features war. It doesn’t have the most powerful ANC or a dozen different spatial audio modes. Instead, it doubles down on what the brand does best: phenomenal sound quality wrapped in a premium, beautifully crafted package. It’s an unapologetically audio-focused headphone for the discerning listener who prioritizes musical fidelity above all else. If you want your wireless headphones to make you feel like you’re in the recording studio, not just an airplane cabin, the Px7 S2e demands your attention. For those who need absolute, world-silencing noise cancellation, other options may be more suitable.
