The Gentle Giant: Dell’s XPS 17 (9730) Still Reigns, But The Crown is Heavy

Dell XPS 17 (9730) Image 1

In the world of powerhouse laptops, the Dell XPS 17 has long been the benchmark for creators who want desktop-grade performance without the desktop. It’s the quintessential “pro” machine for the Windows crowd, a sleek slab of aluminum and carbon fiber that promises to chew through 4K video timelines and complex 3D renders. The latest iteration, the XPS 17 (9730), arrives not with a bang, but with a quiet, confident upgrade. It swaps in Intel’s 13th-gen processors and NVIDIA’s RTX 40-series graphics, but is this iterative step enough to maintain its throne in an increasingly competitive landscape?

An Iconic, If Familiar, Design

Unboxing the XPS 17 (9730) is an exercise in familiarity. The design, with its CNC-milled aluminum chassis and soft-touch carbon fiber palm rest, is virtually unchanged from the last few generations. This is both a blessing and a curse. On one hand, the build quality is absolutely magnificent. The machine feels dense, rigid, and impeccably assembled, exuding a premium feel that few rivals can match. The hinge is perfectly tuned, allowing for a one-finger open while remaining completely wobble-free.

On the other hand, the design is starting to show its age. While the three-sided InfinityEdge display still looks modern, the thick bottom “chin” bezel feels like a holdover from a bygone era. In a world where competitors are shrinking bezels on all four sides, the XPS 17’s adherence to tradition makes it feel slightly less cutting-edge than its internals would suggest. At over 5 lbs (2.3 kg), it’s certainly a heavyweight, but its footprint is impressively compact for a 17-inch machine, fitting into bags designed for older 15-inch laptops.

Performance That Bends, But Doesn’t Break

This is where the 9730 model truly shines. Our review unit, equipped with an Intel Core i7-13700H, 32GB of DDR5 RAM, and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Laptop GPU, is an absolute monster. For creative professionals, this is the sweet spot. Compiling code, editing multi-layer 8K video in DaVinci Resolve, or rendering complex scenes in Blender is handled with remarkable speed. Dell’s custom vapor chamber cooling system does an admirable job of taming these high-power components within the slim chassis, but physics has its limits.

Under sustained, brutal workloads, the machine does experience some thermal throttling. While it never grinds to a halt, you won’t get the absolute peak performance you might from a thicker, gaming-focused laptop with the same specs. For most creative workflows, which involve bursts of high-intensity work rather than constant 100% load, this is a perfectly acceptable trade-off for the svelte form factor. It’s a powerful mobile workstation, but it’s still bound by the thermal constraints of its design.

A Sensory Masterpiece

The star of the show remains the 17-inch, 16:10 aspect ratio display. The optional 4K+ (3840 x 2400) touchscreen panel is a creator’s dream. It’s incredibly sharp, gets brilliantly bright at 500 nits, and boasts outstanding color accuracy that covers 100% of the Adobe RGB gamut. Whether you’re color grading photos or simply watching a movie, content on this screen is breathtaking.

Complementing the visual feast is an equally impressive audio experience. The quad-speaker setup, with two top-firing tweeters and two down-firing woofers, is one of the best you’ll find on any Windows laptop. The sound is full, clear, and has a surprising amount of bass and spatial separation. It makes media consumption a genuine pleasure. Unfortunately, the sensory experience falters with the webcam. The persistent 720p camera is simply unacceptable in a premium machine of this caliber. In an age of remote work and video conferencing, its grainy and soft image is a significant weak point.

The Verdict: A Refined Powerhouse for a Specific User

The Dell XPS 17 (9730) is not a revolutionary leap forward, but a careful refinement of a winning formula. It remains one of the most powerful and beautifully constructed laptops available for creative professionals on the Windows platform. The combination of a stunning 17-inch display, desktop-class performance, and a superb keyboard and trackpad makes it an exceptional tool for content creation.

However, its weaknesses are becoming more apparent. The dated webcam, limited port selection (dongle life is real), and a design that’s starting to feel overly familiar hold it back from perfection. If you are a video editor, 3D artist, or developer who needs maximum screen real estate and processing power in a portable, premium chassis, the XPS 17 is still a top-tier choice. But for those who value modern conveniences and a more forward-looking design, the competition is closer than ever.
