Google Pixel Fold: A First-Gen Folding Foray Worth Considering?

Google Pixel Fold Image 1

The Google Pixel Fold. After years of rumors and speculation, Google has finally entered the foldable phone arena, and not with a half-hearted attempt. This is a full-fledged Pixel experience, folded in half (literally). The question, however, isn’t can Google make a foldable, but should you buy one, especially at this price point? We spent a significant amount of time putting the Pixel Fold through its paces, and here’s our take.

Performance is, as expected from a device running Google’s Tensor G2 chip, generally smooth and responsive. While it might not top synthetic benchmark charts against the latest Snapdragon silicon, in real-world usage, the Pixel Fold handles multitasking, gaming, and demanding applications with ease. The 12GB of RAM certainly helps. Don’t expect miracles in particularly graphically intensive games at maximum settings, but overall, it’s a fluid and enjoyable experience. The software optimizations – especially with Android 14 now onboard – shine, allowing for seamless transitions between the cover and inner displays.

The design is where the Pixel Fold both excels and courts controversy. Google opted for a wider, more landscape-oriented inner display compared to the tall, narrow design of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold series. This decision makes multitasking and content consumption (videos, reading) significantly more comfortable. The hinge, while robust and seemingly durable, does leave a noticeable crease down the center of the folding display – something you’ll likely get used to, but it’s undeniably there. The build quality is excellent; the matte finish on the back feels premium, and the overall heft of the device lends it a sense of solidity. However, its thickness, even when folded, is considerable. It won’t slip easily into every pocket.

The camera system, borrowing heavily from the Pixel 7 Pro, is a major selling point. The 48MP main sensor, combined with the ultrawide and telephoto lenses, delivers exceptional image quality in a variety of lighting conditions. Google’s computational photography prowess is on full display here, producing vibrant, detailed shots with minimal effort. The front-facing cameras, both on the cover and inner displays, are more than adequate for video calls and selfies.

However, the Pixel Fold isn’t without its flaws. The battery life, while decent, isn’t exceptional. Expect to get through a day of moderate use, but heavy users will likely need to top up before bedtime. The price, placing it firmly in the ultra-premium category, makes it a tough sell for those who are not already invested in the Pixel ecosystem or utterly convinced by the foldable form factor. While the software is well-optimized, a few lingering bugs still exist, mostly related to app scaling and occasional UI hiccups.

Ultimately, the Google Pixel Fold is a compelling, albeit expensive, first-generation foldable. Its strengths lie in its well-integrated software, excellent camera system, and comfortable inner display aspect ratio. Its weaknesses are its thickness, price, and less-than-stellar battery life.

The Pixel Fold is best suited for users who are willing to pay a premium for a unique, feature-rich foldable experience and are already fans of the Pixel ecosystem. This isn’t necessarily the best choice for budget-conscious buyers or those solely seeking the absolute best performance per dollar.
