Reaching Warp Speed: A Deep Dive into the ASUS ROG Rapture GT-BE98 PRO WiFi 7 Router

The future of home networking has arrived, and it’s clad in aggressive ROG styling. The ASUS ROG Rapture GT-BE98 PRO isn’t just another router; it’s a statement. This behemoth is one of the first quad-band WiFi 7 routers to hit the market, promising unprecedented speeds and capacity. But does it live up to the hype, and is it worth the hefty price tag? Let’s dive in.

Right out of the box, the GT-BE98 PRO exudes quality. The matte black finish, angular design, and strategically placed vents scream ROG. Build quality feels premium – this is a substantial piece of hardware that’s built to last. While the aesthetics might not be for everyone (it definitely leans into the gamer aesthetic), there’s no denying the attention to detail. The array of ports on the back is impressive, including dual 10Gbps ports and four 2.5Gbps ports, providing ample connectivity for demanding devices.

Performance is, unsurprisingly, the star of the show. Utilizing WiFi 7’s Multi-Link Operation (MLO) and 320MHz channel bandwidth, the GT-BE98 PRO delivers blistering speeds in ideal conditions. During testing, connected to a WiFi 7 compatible laptop, file transfers were noticeably faster, and latency in online games was consistently low. However, the real-world benefits of WiFi 7 are currently limited by the scarcity of compatible devices. Without WiFi 7 clients, you’re essentially buying future-proofing, and the router largely functions as a very powerful, very expensive WiFi 6/6E router.

The quad-band configuration (2.4GHz, two 5GHz bands, and 6GHz) does provide excellent network segmentation, allowing you to dedicate specific bands to different devices or purposes. This is especially useful for homes with a large number of smart home devices or bandwidth-hungry applications running simultaneously. The ASUS Router app remains intuitive and easy to use, providing granular control over network settings, security features, and parental controls. The integrated AiProtection Pro, powered by Trend Micro, adds an extra layer of security, actively scanning for threats and vulnerabilities.

However, the GT-BE98 PRO isn’t without its drawbacks. The sheer size of the router might be a problem for those with limited space. Also, while the performance is impressive, the high price point puts it firmly in the enthusiast category. Furthermore, achieving the full potential of WiFi 7 requires compatible client devices, which are currently few and far between. The benefits are less pronounced if the majority of your devices are still running on older WiFi standards.

In conclusion, the ASUS ROG Rapture GT-BE98 PRO is a powerhouse router that showcases the potential of WiFi 7. It’s packed with features, boasts impressive performance, and offers robust security. However, its high price and the limited availability of WiFi 7 clients make it a tough sell for the average user. This router is best suited for early adopters, tech enthusiasts, and those who demand the absolute best performance regardless of cost.
