Microsoft Surface Pro (2024): OLED Brilliance, Evolved Expectations

Microsoft Surface Pro 2-in-1 Laptop/Tablet (2024), 13

The Surface Pro. It’s practically synonymous with the 2-in-1 category. For years, it’s been the benchmark, the device everyone else tries to beat. And this year, Microsoft’s back with the 2024 edition, sporting a stunning 13-inch OLED display. But in a world overflowing with capable laptops and tablets, does this iteration of the Surface Pro justify its premium price tag? Let’s dive in.

That new OLED panel is, without a doubt, the star of the show. Colors are vibrant and accurate, blacks are inky deep, and the overall image quality is simply breathtaking. Streaming HDR content is a revelation, and even everyday tasks like browsing the web feel more immersive. This alone may be enough to sway many users.

Under the hood, the Surface Pro (2024) boasts the latest generation of Intel processors, offering a noticeable performance bump compared to previous models. Multitasking is smooth, and creative applications like Photoshop and Lightroom run admirably. While it’s not a dedicated gaming machine, it can handle some light gaming with reasonable settings. However, don’t expect to be running demanding AAA titles at max settings. The integrated Iris Xe graphics does a decent job, but it’s still an integrated solution.

The familiar Surface Pro design remains largely unchanged, with the kickstand providing excellent flexibility for various usage scenarios. Build quality is, as expected, top-notch. The magnesium alloy chassis feels premium and durable. The detachable keyboard cover (sold separately, as always) offers a comfortable typing experience, although some may find it a bit cramped compared to a traditional laptop keyboard. The pen experience remains excellent, with improved latency and pressure sensitivity, making it ideal for artists and note-takers.

Battery life, while adequate for a typical workday, isn’t quite as impressive as some competitors. Expect to get around 7-8 hours of mixed usage, which is a step down from some ultraportable laptops. This is a definite trade-off for that vibrant OLED display. Furthermore, the port selection is somewhat limited, with only a couple of Thunderbolt ports and no dedicated USB-A. Dongle life is still real.

The price point, as always, is a major consideration. The Surface Pro (2024) commands a premium, and that doesn’t even include the essential keyboard cover and pen. This positions it firmly in the high-end category, making it a significant investment. However, if you prioritize portability, versatility, and that stunning OLED display, the Surface Pro (2024) offers a compelling, albeit expensive, package.

Ultimately, the Microsoft Surface Pro (2024) is best suited for professionals and creatives who value portability, a premium pen experience, and, above all, that incredible OLED display. If you’re on a budget or prioritize pure processing power, other options may be more suitable.
