Google Pixel Buds Pro Review: Are They Worth the Pro Price Tag?

Google’s Pixel Buds have had a turbulent history, ranging from the quirky fabric cord of the originals to the solid, but unspectacular, second generation. Now, the Pixel Buds Pro arrive, promising to finally deliver a truly premium wireless earbud experience that can challenge the likes of Sony and Apple. But does Google’s ambition translate into a worthy challenger in this fiercely competitive market?

The performance is, thankfully, a massive leap forward. The active noise cancellation (ANC) is remarkably effective, silencing the drone of airplane engines and the rumble of city buses with impressive authority. Google’s custom audio chip, paired with sophisticated algorithms, clearly works wonders. Audio quality is also a highlight, offering a well-balanced sound profile with punchy bass, clear mids, and crisp highs. They handle complex musical arrangements with aplomb and are just as comfortable delivering spoken-word podcasts. A customizable EQ would have been welcome, though.

Design-wise, the Pixel Buds Pro are undeniably Google. They sport a smooth, pebble-like aesthetic that’s both understated and stylish. Available in a range of attractive colors, they’re comfortable to wear for extended periods, thanks to a careful focus on ergonomics. The lack of wingtips might worry some, but the provided ear tips (in multiple sizes) create a secure and snug fit. The build quality feels premium; these are earbuds that should withstand the rigors of daily use.

Feature-wise, the Pixel Buds Pro are packed. Transparency mode allows you to stay aware of your surroundings without removing the earbuds, and it works exceptionally well, sounding natural and clear. Google Assistant integration is seamless, allowing you to control your music, answer calls, and get information with just your voice. Multipoint connectivity, a feature sorely missed in previous Pixel Buds, is finally here, allowing you to seamlessly switch between devices. Spatial audio with head tracking is available for compatible content, adding a layer of immersion to movies and music. Battery life is also commendable, offering around 7 hours with ANC enabled and up to 11 hours with it turned off, and the charging case provides an additional 20 hours.

However, they aren’t perfect. While the ANC is generally excellent, it struggles somewhat with sudden, high-frequency sounds, like keyboard clicks or sharp taps. The touch controls can be a bit finicky at times, requiring precise gestures. And while the sound quality is good, some audiophiles might find it lacking in nuance compared to more specialized audio brands. Finally, the price point positions them firmly in the premium category, making them a significant investment.

The Pixel Buds Pro represent a significant evolution for Google’s audio ambitions. They offer excellent noise cancellation, impressive sound quality, a comfortable design, and a host of useful features. They are not the absolute best in every category, but they offer a well-rounded and compelling package.
