Microsoft Surface Studio 2+: A Deep Dive for Creative Professionals

Microsoft Surface Studio 2+ Image 1

The Surface Studio line has always been a beacon of Microsoft’s vision for creative workflows. The new Surface Studio 2+ isn’t a radical reinvention, but a refined iteration, promising a significant performance boost over its predecessor. This all-in-one desktop, designed for artists, designers, and anyone immersed in visual creation, aims to justify its premium price tag. But does it deliver? Let’s find out.

First impressions matter, and the Studio 2+ retains the iconic, near-weightless hinge that allows the 28-inch PixelSense display to smoothly transition from an upright monitor to a drafting table. The design, largely unchanged, still exudes a minimalist elegance. The screen itself remains a vibrant and color-accurate touch panel, supporting the Surface Pen for precise input.

Under the hood is where the major changes reside. The Studio 2+ now packs an Intel Core i7-11370H processor and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Laptop GPU. This is a welcome upgrade, bringing significant performance gains in demanding applications like Adobe Photoshop, Premiere Pro, and Blender. While not a top-tier gaming rig, the RTX 3060 allows for decent performance in many modern games, though you’ll likely need to dial down settings for optimal frame rates. We observed noticeable improvements in render times and overall responsiveness compared to the previous generation.

Connectivity is adequate, with three USB-C ports (Thunderbolt 4), two USB-A 3.1 ports, a Gigabit Ethernet port, and a headphone jack. We were pleased to see Thunderbolt 4 support, opening up possibilities for connecting high-speed external storage and displays. However, an integrated SD card reader would have been a welcome addition for creative professionals working with cameras.

The Surface Pen continues to be a standout feature, offering excellent pressure sensitivity and tilt recognition. Combined with the large, touch-sensitive display, it provides a natural and intuitive drawing experience. The Surface Dial, sold separately, adds another layer of control, allowing you to quickly access shortcuts and adjust settings in supported applications.

The integrated speakers deliver surprisingly rich and clear audio, making it suitable for media consumption and light audio editing. However, audiophiles will likely still prefer a dedicated external speaker setup.

Value is always a critical consideration, and the Surface Studio 2+ remains a pricey proposition. The performance bump is substantial, but it may not be enough to justify the upgrade for everyone, especially considering the alternatives in the all-in-one space. It’s clear that this machine targets a niche market that values the unique form factor and creative-centric features above all else.

Ultimately, the Surface Studio 2+ is a refined, powerful, and visually stunning all-in-one desktop. It’s an excellent tool for creative professionals who appreciate its unique design and seamless integration with the Surface Pen. However, the high price tag and lack of certain features may make it a less compelling option for some.
