SanDisk 1TB Extreme Portable SSD: Pocket Rocket for Professionals

SanDisk 1TB Extreme Portable SSD - Up to 1050MB/s, USB-C, USB 3.2 Gen 2, IP65 Water and Dust Resistance, Updated Firmware Image 1

In the ever-demanding world of content creation, photography, and videography, storage isn’t just an afterthought; it’s a critical component. Enter the SanDisk 1TB Extreme Portable SSD, a drive promising blazing fast speeds and rugged reliability. Is it just marketing hype, or a genuine tool for streamlining workflows? We put it through its paces to find out.

The first thing you notice is its compact, robust design. The rubberized exterior provides a reassuring grip and the IP65 rating gives you peace of mind when working in less-than-ideal conditions. This isn’t your delicate, stay-at-home SSD; it’s built for the road. The inclusion of both USB-C and USB-A compatibility (via an adapter) is a welcome touch, ensuring broad compatibility with older and newer devices.

Performance is where the Extreme Portable truly shines. SanDisk advertises speeds up to 1050MB/s, and in our testing, we consistently achieved read speeds in the 900-1000MB/s range and write speeds hovering around 850-950MB/s. This translates into incredibly fast file transfers, making short work of large RAW photos or 4K video files. The updated firmware seems to have further optimized performance and stability compared to earlier iterations of the drive. Real-world performance feels snappy and responsive, a noticeable improvement over traditional HDDs or slower SSDs.

While the advertised speeds are impressive, it’s important to note that reaching them requires a USB 3.2 Gen 2 port. Older USB ports will bottleneck performance considerably. Furthermore, sustained write speeds can sometimes dip slightly during particularly large file transfers, though this wasn’t a major issue in our testing.

The drive’s small size is generally a plus, but it also means it’s easy to misplace. A built-in loop allows you to attach it to a keychain or bag, which is a thoughtful addition. Also, while IP65 offers decent protection, it’s not fully submersible; don’t expect it to survive a swim.

Ultimately, the SanDisk 1TB Extreme Portable SSD offers a compelling blend of speed, durability, and portability. It’s an ideal solution for creative professionals, photographers, and anyone needing fast, reliable storage on the go.
