Dell XPS 15 (9530): Still the King of Premium, but at What Cost?

Dell XPS 15 (9530) Image 1

The Dell XPS 15. The name itself evokes a certain reverence in the laptop world. It’s been the go-to recommendation for creative professionals, students, and anyone seeking a powerful, portable, and undeniably stylish machine for years. The 9530 iteration aims to continue that legacy, packing the latest Intel silicon and NVIDIA graphics into its familiar, svelte chassis. But in a market saturated with compelling alternatives, does the XPS 15 still wear the crown?

Performance is, unsurprisingly, a strong suit. Our review unit, equipped with an Intel Core i9-13900H and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070, chewed through demanding tasks like video editing and 3D rendering with ease. Gaming performance was also impressive, pushing high frame rates at the display’s native resolution. The cooling system does a commendable job of keeping things under control, although the fans can become quite audible under sustained load. The machine handles everyday tasks flawlessly thanks to its ample memory and fast storage.

The design remains largely unchanged, sticking to the tried-and-true formula of a CNC-machined aluminum chassis and a carbon fiber weave palm rest. It’s a sophisticated aesthetic that feels premium to the touch. The bezels are still impressively thin, contributing to a compact footprint. However, the lack of a significant design refresh might leave some feeling that it’s starting to look a little dated compared to more radically redesigned competitors.

The build quality is exceptional. There’s virtually no flex in the chassis, and the hinge feels sturdy and reliable. The keyboard offers a comfortable typing experience with decent key travel, although some might find it a tad shallow. The trackpad is large and responsive, supporting multi-finger gestures with precision.

The display is a highlight, offering vibrant colors, excellent contrast, and impressive brightness. The optional OLED panel provides even deeper blacks and richer colors, making it a particularly attractive option for content creators and media enthusiasts. The webcam, however, remains a mediocre 720p unit, which is disappointing considering the laptop’s premium price tag. Port selection is adequate, but the absence of a full-size SD card reader is a glaring omission for photographers and videographers. Battery life is decent but not exceptional, typically lasting around 6-7 hours with mixed usage.

Ultimately, the Dell XPS 15 (9530) is a powerhouse of a laptop that excels in performance, design, and build quality. However, its high price tag, mediocre webcam, and incremental updates make its value proposition a bit more complex.
