Apple Studio Display Review: The Pro’s Desktop Companion?

Apple Studio Display Image 1

The Apple Studio Display arrived with a hefty dose of anticipation. Positioned as the affordable (relatively speaking, of course) sibling to the Pro Display XDR, it aims to bring Apple’s signature display quality to a wider audience. But does it deliver, or are compromises made in the name of price? Let’s dive in.

First impressions are strong. The design is classic Apple: minimalist, sleek, and undeniably premium. The all-aluminum enclosure feels solid and robust, inspiring confidence in its longevity. The standard tilt-adjustable stand is perfectly adequate, though the height-adjustable option will likely be a necessity for many, adding to the overall cost.

The 27-inch 5K Retina display itself is stunning. Colors are vibrant and accurate, thanks to the P3 wide color gamut. Text is razor-sharp, making it a joy to work with for extended periods. Brightness is adequate at 600 nits, but doesn’t quite reach the HDR heights of its more expensive sibling. Still, for everyday tasks and content consumption, the image quality is exceptional.

Apple’s integration of features is notable. The built-in A13 Bionic chip powers features like Center Stage for video calls, spatial audio, and “Hey Siri” functionality. The six-speaker sound system is surprisingly good, offering a clear and balanced audio experience, far surpassing most integrated display speakers. The 12MP Ultra Wide camera delivers excellent video quality, even in less-than-ideal lighting conditions, making it a huge asset for remote workers.

However, the Studio Display isn’t without its flaws. The lack of ProMotion (Apple’s adaptive refresh rate technology) feels like a missed opportunity at this price point. The included stand, while sturdy, limits adjustability without paying extra. Furthermore, some users have reported issues with the camera’s image processing, leading to over-sharpening or noise in certain conditions. While software updates have addressed some of these concerns, they haven’t completely eliminated them.

The value proposition is where things get tricky. While the display itself is excellent, the price, especially with the height-adjustable stand, puts it in competition with some compelling alternatives that offer similar or even better features for the same or less money. You’re paying a premium for the Apple ecosystem integration and design.

Ultimately, the Apple Studio Display is a beautiful and capable monitor that excels in image quality, design, and Apple ecosystem integration. But its high price and lack of certain features make it a tough sell for those not deeply invested in the Apple ecosystem or who prioritize specific features like ProMotion or superior stand flexibility.
