Wi-Fi 7 has arrived with promises of a revolutionary leap in wireless connectivity, but the initial hardware has carried an equally revolutionary price tag. ASUS aims to bridge that gap with the ZenWiFi BD4, a mesh system designed to deliver next-generation features without demanding a top-tier budget. This strategic move makes it one of the most intriguing networking products of the year, forcing us to reconsider the path to a truly multi-gigabit wireless future.

The core of the ZenWiFi BD4’s appeal—and its biggest compromise—is its dual-band BE9200 configuration. Instead of the tri-band setup seen in flagship Wi-Fi 7 routers, the BD4 operates solely on the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. This means it forgoes the wide-open, interference-free 6 GHz spectrum that is a hallmark of both Wi-Fi 6E and high-end Wi-Fi 7. However, it leverages key Wi-Fi 7 technologies on the familiar 5 GHz band, including 4K-QAM for denser data transmission and Multi-Link Operation (MLO) for compatible clients. In practice, with a Wi-Fi 7 enabled device like a new smartphone or laptop, you can achieve wireless speeds that noticeably surpass what’s possible on even a high-end Wi-Fi 6 system, making it a tangible upgrade for early adopters.

From a design perspective, the BD4 follows the established ZenWiFi aesthetic. The nodes are clean, minimalist cylinders that blend effortlessly into a living room or home office, a welcome departure from the aggressive, antenna-bristling look of many high-performance routers. Build quality is solid, with a reassuring heft and premium-feeling plastics. Connectivity is thoroughly modern, featuring a 2.5Gbps WAN port that ensures your router isn’t the bottleneck for a multi-gig internet plan, along with a 2.5Gbps LAN port and additional gigabit ports for wired devices. This thoughtful I/O selection is a standout feature at its expected price point.

Where the ZenWiFi BD4 truly shines is in the ASUS software ecosystem. Setup is a breeze using the ASUS Router app, but the real power is unlocked in the web interface, which offers granular control over every conceivable setting. Critically, it includes the full AiProtection Pro suite, offering lifetime network security and advanced parental controls with no subscription fees—a massive value-add that competitors often lock behind a paywall. The AiMesh system is as robust as ever, allowing for seamless roaming between nodes and offering the flexibility of a wired or wireless backhaul. While the wireless backhaul on this dual-band system must share the 5 GHz band with client devices, performance remains strong enough for most homes.

The value proposition of the ZenWiFi BD4 is nuanced. It is not the ultimate, no-compromise Wi-Fi 7 solution. Instead, it’s a pragmatic and intelligent stepping stone. For users upgrading from Wi-Fi 5 or an early Wi-Fi 6 router, it offers a significant performance boost and access to next-gen features for new devices without the hefty investment of a tri-band system. However, those living in extremely congested wireless environments might find more immediate relief from a tri-band Wi-Fi 6E system. Ultimately, the ZenWiFi BD4 is best for the tech-forward user who wants to build a future-ready network on a realistic budget, understanding that they are trading the pristine 6 GHz highway for a significant speed boost on the roads they already travel.
