The dream of a truly smart, high-performance projector that just works has always felt slightly out of reach. XGIMI’s Horizon S Max arrives with the promise to finally bridge that gap, blending cinematic quality with unprecedented intelligence. It challenges the notion that premium projection requires complex setup and constant tinkering.

The Horizon S Max is a masterclass in blending lifestyle aesthetics with serious projection technology. Encased in a sleek, compact chassis with a “Misty Gold” finish and a fabric speaker grille, it looks more like a piece of high-end audio equipment than a traditional projector. This design ethos is intentional; it’s meant to be seen and to integrate seamlessly into a modern living room, rather than being hidden away. The build quality feels substantial and premium, from the smooth finish of the casing to the satisfying click of the buttons on the included remote. Connectivity is modern but minimal, featuring a single crucial HDMI 2.1 port (supporting eARC), a USB port, and an audio out jack, reinforcing its focus on streamlined, smart functionality over a plethora of legacy inputs.

At its core, the S Max is powered by XGIMI’s new Dual Light 2.0 system, which combines the strengths of both laser and LED light sources. The result is a stunningly vibrant and color-accurate image that covers an impressive 99.9% of the DCI-P3 color gamut. With 1500 ISO Lumens of brightness, it’s capable of producing a punchy, engaging picture on screens up to 200 inches, though its sweet spot for optimal contrast is closer to 100-120 inches. In a dim or dark room, the 4K picture is exceptionally sharp and detailed. While it can hold its own against some ambient light, it’s not a “daylight” projector; pulling the blinds is still recommended for the best experience. Where it slightly falters, like most DLP projectors in its class, is in achieving deep, inky blacks. Dark scenes are rendered capably, but home theater purists will notice a lack of absolute contrast compared to more expensive, dedicated cinema projectors.

Where the S Max truly separates itself from the pack is with its intelligence. XGIMI’s Intelligent Screen Adaptation (ISA) 5.0 is the real star of the show. Upon startup or repositioning, the projector automatically adjusts focus, keystone correction, and screen alignment in seconds. It can even detect and avoid obstacles like light switches on the wall. The newest trick is Wall Color Adaptation, which automatically adjusts the color profile to compensate for non-white projection surfaces, a brilliant feature for those without a dedicated screen. For gamers, the inclusion of a 120Hz refresh rate at 1080p and a dedicated low-latency game mode makes it a viable and immersive alternative to a gaming monitor. The built-in Harman Kardon sound system is another high point, delivering audio that is surprisingly robust, clear, and room-filling, easily outclassing the speakers found in most TVs and many competing projectors.

Running on the official Google TV platform, the user experience is fluid and familiar, offering access to nearly every streaming app you could want. The value proposition is strong for the right user. While its price point puts it up against some excellent 4K TVs, no television can offer the S Max’s flexibility and screen-size potential in such a small, elegant package. It isn’t trying to replace a five-figure dedicated home cinema setup. Instead, it perfects the concept of the premium, all-in-one lifestyle projector. For apartment dwellers, renters, or anyone seeking a massive, high-quality picture without the hassle and permanent installation, the XGIMI Horizon S Max is a compelling and brilliantly executed solution.
