Bose’s New Audio King: The Smart Ultra Soundbar Review

Bose Smart Ultra Soundbar Image 1

In the crowded arena of premium soundbars, creating a product that genuinely stands out is a monumental task. Yet, Bose has consistently carved out a space for itself by blending sophisticated audio engineering with minimalist design. With the new Bose Smart Ultra Soundbar, the company isn’t just releasing an update; it’s making a statement. This is their flagship, an evolution of the excellent Smart Soundbar 900, now armed with A.I.-powered enhancements. But in a market dominated by heavyweights from Sonos and Sennheiser, does this new contender have the brains and brawn to claim the throne? We spent some time with it to find out.

Performance: The Intelligent Soundstage

Let’s get straight to the point: the Smart Ultra Soundbar sounds phenomenal. Its core strength lies in its ability to create an impressively wide and immersive soundstage from a single enclosure. With Dolby Atmos content, the two up-firing drivers do a commendable job of adding a vertical dimension to the audio. While it won’t replace a dedicated ceiling-speaker setup, the effect is convincing, creating a “bubble” of sound that effectively envelops the listener in scenes like the rain-soaked streets of Blade Runner 2049 or the chaotic dogfights in Top Gun: Maverick.

Where the “Ultra” truly earns its name is with the new A.I. Dialogue Mode. This isn’t your typical vocal-boost EQ setting. Instead, it uses machine learning to analyze the audio in real-time, isolating speech and raising it with surgical precision without squashing the surrounding ambient sounds or score. For late-night viewing or action films where dialogue is often buried in the mix, this feature is a legitimate game-changer. Vocals are rendered with crystalline clarity, feeling present and natural rather than artificially amplified.

For non-Atmos content, Bose’s proprietary TrueSpace technology intelligently upmixes stereo and 5.1 signals, pushing audio to the height channels to create a virtualized surround effect. It’s remarkably effective, giving standard TV shows and older movies a sense of scale and immersion they otherwise lack. Music playback is also a strong suit, delivering the balanced, room-filling sound Bose is known for, though audiophiles will still prefer a dedicated stereo pair. The one glaring omission, however, remains the lack of support for DTS:X, a major drawback for physical media collectors with extensive Blu-ray libraries.

Design and Build Quality

Aesthetically, the Smart Ultra is classic Bose: sleek, understated, and impeccably built. It retains the same form factor as its predecessor, with a beautiful tempered glass top and a perforated metal grille that wraps around the front and sides. It feels dense and substantial, exuding a premium quality that justifies its price tag. This elegant design comes with a practical downside, however. The glass top, while gorgeous, is a magnet for dust and fingerprints and can produce distracting reflections from the TV screen above it, especially in a brightly lit room. At just over 41 inches wide, it’s best paired with TVs 55 inches or larger to maintain visual balance.

Features and Ecosystem

Setting up the soundbar is straightforward via the Bose Music app, which guides you through Wi-Fi connection and the ADAPTiQ room calibration process. ADAPTiQ uses a headset with a built-in microphone to measure your room’s acoustic properties and tailors the sound profile accordingly, a crucial step for optimizing performance.

Connectivity is adequate but not exhaustive. You get a single HDMI eARC port for a high-bandwidth connection to your TV, along with an optical input. For wireless streaming, it’s fully equipped with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Apple AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, and Chromecast built-in. The glaring limitation here is the absence of HDMI passthrough. This means you cannot connect a source like an Apple TV or a gaming console directly to the soundbar, forcing all devices to be plugged into the TV. While this simplifies cable management, it’s a constraint that feels out of place on a flagship product, especially for users with limited HDMI ports on their television.

Like its competitors, the Smart Ultra is part of a modular ecosystem. You can wirelessly add the Bose Bass Module and a pair of Bose Surround Speakers to build a true, ground-shaking surround sound system over time, though doing so sends the total cost soaring into the stratosphere.

The Final Verdict

The Bose Smart Ultra Soundbar is an exceptional piece of audio hardware that largely succeeds in its mission. It delivers a vast, immersive sound experience from a single, elegant unit, and its new A.I. Dialogue Mode is arguably the best vocal enhancement technology on the market today. It’s a masterclass in computational audio and premium design.

This soundbar is best for the discerning user who values simplicity, exceptional vocal clarity, and a wide soundstage without the complexity of a multi-speaker system. If you primarily stream your content and want a “set it and forget it” solution that sounds incredible for both movies and music, the Smart Ultra is a top-tier choice. However, dedicated home theater enthusiasts who demand DTS:X support and the flexibility of multiple HDMI inputs will find its omissions hard to overlook at this premium price point. It’s an intelligent evolution, but one that still asks you to live within the specific, curated walls of the Bose ecosystem.
