Sennheiser Ambeo Soundbar Plus Review: The New King of Virtual Surround?

Sennheiser Ambeo Soundbar Plus Image 1

When Sennheiser unleashed the original Ambeo Soundbar (now the “Max”), it was a revelation—a monolithic beast that bent the rules of physics to deliver a multi-speaker surround experience from a single enclosure. It was also enormous and punishingly expensive. Now, the audio giant is back with a more accessible sequel: the Sennheiser Ambeo Soundbar Plus. The mission is clear: distill that same 3D audio magic into a smaller, more living-room-friendly package. The question is, does this compact successor deliver the same jaw-dropping immersion, or are there too many compromises?

Design and Build Quality

Unboxing the Ambeo Plus, you’re immediately greeted by Sennheiser’s signature brand of understated German engineering. It’s dense, solid, and feels impeccably constructed. Wrapped in a premium acoustic fabric with a brushed metal top plate, it eschews flashy design for a more refined aesthetic that blends into most entertainment setups. At 41 inches wide, it’s significantly more manageable than its gargantuan predecessor and will sit comfortably under most TVs 55 inches and larger without blocking the screen.

The top panel houses a clean set of touch-capacitive controls that illuminate when in use, and a subtle LED strip provides at-a-glance feedback for volume, input, and Ambeo processing. It feels every bit the premium product its price tag suggests—a sophisticated piece of audio hardware that doesn’t scream for attention.

Features and Setup

The magic of Ambeo lies in its virtualization technology, powered by a sophisticated room calibration process. Where others ask you to use a smartphone app and walk around your room, Sennheiser builds four far-field microphones directly into the soundbar. The setup process is a breeze: initiate calibration via the Smart Control app, and the soundbar emits a series of frequency sweeps. In about three minutes, it has a precise acoustic map of your room, allowing it to bounce sound off your walls and ceiling to create virtual speakers.

Connectivity is robust, featuring a single HDMI eARC port for lossless audio from your TV, two additional HDMI inputs for other sources, an optical input, and RCA analog inputs. On the wireless front, it supports everything you’d expect: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, Apple AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect, and built-in Google Chromecast. The Smart Control app is your hub for everything, from EQ adjustments to toggling the Ambeo 3D sound mode, and it works reliably.

Performance: A Sonic Force Field

Let’s get to the main event: the sound. The Ambeo Soundbar Plus is armed with nine drivers, including two up-firing drivers for height channels and two 4-inch woofers for bass. In practice, the result is astonishing. When fed a quality Dolby Atmos or DTS:X soundtrack, the Ambeo Plus creates a cohesive, detailed, and expansive sound field that extends far beyond the physical confines of the bar.

During the opening chase scene of 6 Underground, sound objects like whizzing bullets and roaring engines are placed with uncanny precision not just to the left and right, but above and behind you. It’s this ability to create a genuine “bubble” of sound that sets the Ambeo Plus apart from most of its competitors. The virtualization is so effective that in the right room, you’ll be looking over your shoulder for sounds that aren’t really there. Dialogue remains anchored to the screen and is rendered with superb clarity and richness, a testament to Sennheiser’s audio tuning prowess.

For music, the soundbar is equally capable, delivering a balanced, detailed, and dynamic performance. You can listen in pure stereo or engage the Ambeo upmixing, which does a commendable job of expanding stereo tracks into an immersive soundscape without sounding overly processed.

However, there is one area where a compromise is evident: deep bass. While the integrated woofers provide tight, punchy mid-bass that is more than adequate for casual TV watching, they simply cannot replicate the visceral, room-shaking rumble of a dedicated subwoofer. Explosions in action films lack that gut-punch impact. Sennheiser knows this, of course, and offers the optional (and expensive) Ambeo Sub. While the sub integrates seamlessly and completes the sonic picture, it pushes the total system cost into a whole new territory.

The Final Verdict

The Sennheiser Ambeo Soundbar Plus is a phenomenal piece of audio engineering. It successfully brings the company’s revolutionary 3D sound virtualization to a more accessible size and price point. For movie lovers in apartments or medium-sized rooms who crave a truly immersive, single-box Dolby Atmos experience without the clutter of satellite speakers, this is arguably the best-performing soundbar on the market. Its ability to create a convincing and detailed dome of sound is second to none.

However, its value proposition is complex. At its standalone price, it faces stiff competition from systems that include a subwoofer. If your priority is thunderous, floor-shaking bass, you’ll either need to budget for the Ambeo Sub or look elsewhere. But if your goal is the most accurate, expansive, and believable virtual surround sound possible from one elegant package, the Ambeo Soundbar Plus has earned its crown.
